Two of the country's most consistently brilliant actresses, Iza Calzado and Dimples Romana, marked their first time working together on the big screen by showcasing their dramatic chops as two mothers torn between modernity and ancestral spiritual beliefs in "The Caretakers."

Directed by Shugo Praico (Nanahimik Ang Gabi), the eco-horror film, inspired by supernatural lore and deep-rooted beliefs, is a collaborative project between the Philippines' House of Horror - Regal Entertainment Inc., and the Home of International Award-Winning Content - Rein Entertainment. It also features young stars Marco Masa, Ashley Sarmiento, Althea Ruedas, Erika Clemente, Erin Espiritu, and special participation from content creators Inka Magnaye and Jake Taylor.

More than the story, the film's strength lies in Iza Calzado and Dimples Romana's ‘mothering’ performances. Both have portrayed their characters memorably efficient and human. At its core, "The Caretakers" explores the lengths one will go to protect their family and the idea of home. The film has themes that deeply resonant with both lead actresses.

In an interview, Dimples emphasized the significance of caretakers in every household: “Kung paano kami mga ina na gagawin ang lahat para sa aming pamilya. Ang isa ay hinahabol ang pisikal na tahanan, ang isa naman ay seguridad. Parehong nais protektahan ang pamilya nila. Bilang mga magulang, tayo ang itinalagang ‘tagapag-alaga.’ Bukod sa pag-aalaga sa kanila sa pisikal na aspeto, dapat din nating alagaan ang kanilang mental na kalusugan sa pamamagitan ng paggalang sa kanila.”

While the premise seems familiar and may feel like nothing you haven’t seen before, it’s the consistent build of tensions and the eerie atmosphere matched with unearthly sound effects that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The film pays a homage to traditional Filipino horror while it also pokes on modern societal and environmental issues. The family drama also adds depth to the horror by creating emotional connections with the characters, making their fears and struggles more relatable.

Though we understand that a mother would risk her life for her children in a heart beat, Iza's character left an impression that sometimes it is better to let go of things without trying to get even against those who have wronged you or your loved ones, as it often harm your own wellbeing more (and the people around you) than if you simply let go and let them go.

The final act will make you raise your eyebrows as it reveals a shocking twist that reveals another perspective of the story. The unexpected turn of events will leave you questioning most of the things you thought you knew about the characters and their motivations.

Immerse yourself in fear, suspense, and the ultimate horror experience designed for the big screen. Don’t miss The Caretakers— now haunting in cinemas nationwide.
